The Cuban Chef: John Connell Maribona
“The charismatic “barbaro” behnd the group Cana Son, John Connell Maribona is a vocalist and the chef-owner of well-regarded Cuban restaurant Pambiche. Portland-raised by a family of Cuban émigrés, “Juanito” Maribona developed an interest in his ancestral musical roots foraging through ethnomusicological archives while studying abroad. Years in punk-rock bands prepared him for the role as leader of one of Portland’s most successful Latin music groups. (And years behind the line at restaurants such as Greek Cucina prepared him for Pambiche, which he runs with his wife and partner, Hada Salinas.) Full of animated electricity, Maribona leads the tightly coiled outfit through the rich pre-salsa tradition of Cuban son music. The countrypolitan cousin of the more throbbing mambo, son is a vivid, earthy music, steeped in lilting Spanish posey and buoyed by pulsing bass, strummed/plucked strings and a sensual brassiness that dares you not to dance. With de rigueur Cuban spice and rhythmic precision, the players in Cana Son follow the conjunto de son instrumentation of acoustic guitar, the smaller tres guitar, upright bass, trumpet and percussion. They evoke a certain pre-revolutionary Cuban nostalgia with songs by Ignacio Pineiro, Arsenio Rodriguez, Felix Chapottin and Beny More, among others. Cana Son is not the only Cuban-inspired band locally (the excellent Afincando, led by Salvadoran timbalero Giovanni Cruz; and Alfredo Hernandez-Froment and Yovanny Perez’s Cubaneo both come to mind), but with their highly successful Mambo Lounge gigs, Cana Son continues to be smack-dab in the middle of the clave with the dance crowd.”
