From Notes & Chords, January 2009, Jazzscene:

The most obvious "new event" this month is the inauguration of Barak Obama as the 44th President of the United States. He is the first African American to be elected to the office. In exchanging holiday greetings with Ambassador of Investment & Special Cultural Promotions, Rupert Blaize, we learned that his election is truly big news in Antigua. He called the victory, "sweet and thrilling", and hopes we will "experience better race relations in America" because of it.

The Honorable, Baldwin Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua, has celebrated Obama's victory by naming the highest peak in Antigua, Mount Obama, in his honor. Formerly called "Boggy Peak", the elevation is 1327 ft., 402 meters.

In the letter he sent to the president-elect, Baldwin said "Your election will not only transform America, it can transform the world". Antigua is a former British Colony, whose 85,000 residents are descended from African slaves brought to harvest the sugar cane fields in the 1700's.

Blaize has been commissioned by the Antigua and Barbuda Tourist Office in New York, to compose a song entitled "Mount Obama". This song will be featured at an event in Washington, DC, two nights before the January 20th inauguration. He composed the lyrics and melody, and recorded it in Antigua during the Christmas holiday. He has promised to send us a copy. Goggle "Mount Obama" to read all about it.
