Craig ‘Rocky’ Rockwell Craig’s friends call him 'Rocky', and he lives in Clarkston, Washington with his wife, Carolyn, and one of their three children, Rebekah. He is very proud to say that their son, Joshua, is in Japan with the US Navy, and other daughter, Bethany, is a marketing student at the University of Idaho in Moscow. In May of 2003, Rocky returned to the Clarkston Natural Resource Office of the Corps of Engineers after 5 years working on the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial at the national level. Rocky’s involvement with the Lewis and Clark story began in 1980, with his first position as a Park Ranger for the Corps of Engineers. Because of the importance of Lewis and Clark to the history of the Corps of Engineers, he has used the expedition story in his interpretive programs all through his career. When the bicentennial was beginning to gel in about 1996, Rocky worked to engage the Corps in preparations, which led to his being selected as the Columbia River Basin Coordinator on the Corps' National Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Team when it was formed in 1999. This position evolved ever more national in scope and, in April of 2001, led to his being selected as one of two Field Liaisons for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Caucus of the US Congress, working on behalf of the Caucus from coast to coast. In 1998, as a way of bringing history to life, Rocky began doing portrayals as Captain William Clark, wearing the most historically accurate Clark uniform in the country. He enjoys speaking to kids and adults alike -- in classrooms, at outdoor activities, at receptions and at more formal events. The Clark persona allows Rocky a unique and fun opportunity to promote the bicentennial while teaching history. Although no longer working at the national level, he will continue to do interpretive work for the bicentennial at nationally significant events across the country. Craig’s wife and youngest daughter often accompany him as William Clark’s wife, Harriet Kennerly Radford Clark, and stepdaughter, Mary Preston Radford. |
