Leroy Critcher has been playing the guitar for more than 25 years. He began playing rock 'n roll and blues in his early teens with small groups, choirs and jazz bands in and around his native Oklahoma City, turning professional at age sixteen. As well as his strong blues and jazz background, his playing has developed to include all styles from classical to ethnic to the avante-garde.
He studied arranging from the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, and composition at the University of Nebraska. He has done extensive recording work both in the midwest and the Portland area. Leroy has also written for film and video in the midwest for Nebraska Public Television, and locally for various northwest corporations. For a time, he was the musical director for a modern dance troupe, touring the midwest and east coast.
After moving to Portland, he spent several years as the resident guitarist for Portland Civic Theater. As well as performing and composing, he currently teaches guitar and bass at Beaverton Music.
In the hands of Leroy Critcher, the solo guitar produces a broad dynamic range of expression and color. Familiar pop favorites, classical melodies, jazz standards as well as Broadway show tunes and ethnic selections create a warm and stylish atmosphere for receptions, gallery openings, cocktail parties or winery events.
For weddings, Leroy can provide traditional ceremony music or a custom program to fit any stylistic or denominational preference.
For receptions, the solo guitar offers a variety of pleasant background music for dining and conversation.
Leroy also performs with his trio (guitar, bass & drums) featuring jazz, light rock and rhythm & blues tunes as well as ethnic styles. Whenever possible, they are happy to play your requests.
