 John English - aka
"The Voice"

 Print Profile Sound Sample

John English, known as "The Voice" has been singing professionally since the age of 19.  He first developed his love of the music of Frank Sinatra as a child listening to his grandfather's windup Victrola phonograph, and he's been hooked ever since!

"The lyrics meant something, and doing the stuff he did, had meaning."  Because of it, he never got into the Beatles, or Disco.  He emphatically states, "If it wasn't Sinatra, or big band music, forget it!"

In addition to the Sinatra material, he also sang with the Portland Opera Chorus for a season and a half.  His rich baritone vocie was an asset at the Opera, like Sinatra, who sang in the "Italian bel canto" style.

"I don't try to be Sinatra," he says.  "I try to bring Sinata's tune to life."  Indeed it is uncanny how much he sounds like "Ol' Blue Eyes", so much so that people frequently believe that he is lyp-syncing.

His shows take his audience back to the early years of Sinatra's fame, the 1940's and his years with Columbia Records, the Harry James Band, and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.  The show also includes tunes from the decade between 1953 to 1962, when Sinatra was with Capitol Records.  Many consider the "Capitol" years as his greatest recording period.

English performs more than 200 of Sinatra's most requested songs, including such gems as "The Best Is Yet To Come", "Chicago", "Embraceable You", New York, New York", "Fly Me To The Moon", "Night and Day", and "My Baby Just Cares For Me".

In addition to the Sinatra material, John also includes Las Vegas era, "Rat Pack" tunes by artists such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Bobby Darren, and others by Mel Torme, Steve Lawrence, Tom Jones and Glenn Miller.

Music Minus One Studio in New York, puts together the pre-recorded digital background music for his performances.  All of the orchestrations are close to the original Big Band arrangements, in the style of Axel Stordahl, Billy May, and Nelson Riddle

His Tribute to Frank Sinatra has taken this classy crooner to numerous venues such as San Francisco's plush Clift Hotel, the Space Needle in Seattle, The Sands Convention Center in Las Vegas, the Golden Nugget Casino in Reno, and to Anchorage, Alaska.

He has also performed for numerous fundraising events benefiting the Boys & Girls Club.

Currently, John is a regular entertainer for the Port of Portland at the Portland Airport, and the Clarion Hotel.

In addition to performing as a soloist, John English also sings with Jack Quinby's 18 pc Big Band.  Swinging together with the Jack Quinby Orchestra, John and the band have become favorites at weddings, anniversaries, corporate events, and fund raisers.
