In September 2005, the Portland Jazz Festival, in partnership with other local businesses including Azumano Travel, sponsored a group of New Orleans jazz musicians, who had been displaced by Hurricane Katrina, to come to Portland.
They arranged for emergency transportation, temporary housing, replaced lost instruments and arranged for performances and fundraisers.
Of that group of 50 musicians, a dozen have decided to stay permanently, including Phillips. Marty Hughley of the Oregonian says, "Devin Phillips has emerged as the star...a compelling, fiercely focused presence on the bandstand".
After performing at numerous gigs, and attracting much positive attention, Phillips says he is "twice the saxophonist he was before he came here".
He has recently had pubilicity photos taken and is busily planning the next stage of his career with his band, New Orleans Straight Ahead.
Please watch this space for more information and Devin's public performance calendar, coming soon.
