As a veteran percussionist of the Pacific Northwest music scene, Catón Lyles has been quite “ubiquitous” (as described in Portland's daily newspaper, the Oregonian) and it’s true. On any given day one may see him in numerous musical settings, ranging from the traditional West African sounds of the critically acclaimed Northwest Afrikan-American Ballet to the jazz sounds of the Dennis Springer Quintet, Andre Kitaev or Reparations to the Blues-Rock and Reggae of The Gary Small Band or the Hip Hop styling of Hungry Mob to the island sounds of Steel Pan bands Island Breeze, Steel Jammin’, and Curare, to the delight of audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest, in South Africa, Scotland and throughout the United States. He’s also been a sideman with legends H.B. Barnham and The Supremes featuring Mary Wilson.

His diversity on the bandstand spills over into numerous recordings for artists in various genres: New Age, Latin-jazz, R&B, Pop, Folk, Big Band Jazz, Funk, Fusion, Hip-Hop, and in commercial jingle production.

Catón Lyles is also a professional dance accompanist and was a 20-year staff member of the Jefferson Performing and Visual Arts Center. He has worked with many world-renowned choreographers in Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Modern, and West African dance.

In addition to his hand drum workshops, residencies and lecture-demonstrations, Mr. Lyles has performed for 19 years with Kukatonon, a children’s West African dance troupe. He is an adjunct faculty member of the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics and a former member of the Advisory committee of the same school.

He is also on the faculty of Young Musicians and Artists and serves as an adjunct faculty member of the Reed College dance department. He is also one of the artists/staff with Camp Caldera and has been a faculty member of the Mount Hood and Beacocks/Mount Hood Festival of Jazz Instrumental Jazz Workshop for many years.

As both a featured and background actor, Catón Lyles has appeared in several independent films, national television programs and videos, as well as being featured in a television commercial that was aired internationally.
