The ancient Greek poet, Sophocles, c496 - 406 BC, understood it way back then :              "Success is dependent on effort". 

                 This year, I am truly amazed that another year has whizzed by!

One trend we noticed in 2014:  We booked many more Polka Bands than ever before.   We are pleased the word is out that we represent a number of excellent  Polka bands.  Please call us as soon as you select your date.  This music is so much fun, these groups tend to get booked up many months ahead of time. Many Polka bands travel to Oktoberfest celebrations out of state.  Chicken Dance anyone??

Francis Albert Sinatra.  The actual date was December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, N.J.  However, we plan to celebrate his birthday all year, because of the lasting effect he had on the contemporary music of the 20th century. We're sure you've all heard of "The Great American Songbook"??  We've got soloists, and small and large bands, that specialize in his songs that have become forever woven into the fabric of our hearts and memories.  Call us soon with your requests!

Did you know we book the Lion Dancers from the Lan Su Chinese Gardens?  They are particularly appropriate for wedding receptions because of the symbolism of their moves, which wish long life and happiness to the couple.  Who knew a head of lettuce had such power?!  Call us to find out why.

                              Beating The Black Dog

Sir Winston Churchill called it the "Black Dog".  It never failed to visit him during times of deep psychological distress...such as when he was Prime Minister of Great Britain, in the thick of fighting WWII.



   I am happy to report that as we embrace a brand new year, that "old black dog" of mine, got stuck in the old year, and for the most part, has ceased nipping at my heals!

34th Annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, July 18 - 20th

   The Cathedral Park Jazz Festival is the longest-running, free Jazz Festival west of the Mississippi.  Located under the piers of the iconic St.  John's Bridge in north Portland, Oregon.  They have an outstanding line-up planned again this year.

The Jazz Society of Oregon put out the call, in the eleventh hour, to a group of volunteers affiliated with the Jazz Society of Oregon.  They jumped in with gusto, and filled all of the committees with excited neighborhood, and jazz-loving volunteers, to ensure the festival would happen. 

Special kudos go to Arthur Marx for his untiring efforts in making sure the 2014 festival would fly high!!  Huge thanks also, to the Central Hotel at 8608 N. Lombard for sponsoring After Hours events and fund-raisers.

Friday, July 18th is Blues Night,   Roosevelt High School Band opens the show at 5pm.  Blues night features 3 professional bands including the DK Stewart Sextet with the Soul Survivor Horns at 6:20 pm. 

Saturday and Sunday, July 19th and 20th, boasts many of the absolute finest, Portland-based jazz artists.  Some of these All-Stars include the Mel Brown Sextet, Tom Wakeling, Randy Porter, and David Evans Trio, Bobby Torres Latin All-Stars, Farnell Newton, Devin Phillips, Louis "King Louis" Pain B3 Trio, featuring Renato Caranto and Micah Kassell. 

 The Battleground Washington High School Band will lead off the action at noon on Saturday on the main stage. Portland Youth Orchestra sets off the downbeat at noon on Sunday.

An expanded beer garden and food booths will again be available, as well as other vendor booths, as in years past. They will be re-located to the bottom of the hill on N. Crawford St., so there will much more room in the bowl to spread out blankets and low, beach chairs to enjoy the music.  Concert-goers are also invited to bring their own picnics and sunscreen.  All ages welcome.

John English, "The Voice",
    Sings a Tribute to Frank Sinatra.
        Returns from his East Coast tour, August 1st.

                                                                       
     John English, "The Voice" left Portland on April 1st to fly to Philadelphia to perform a series of gigs.  For the second year in a row, he sang at the "Philly Showcase of Wine and Cheese" which benefited the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia.  He had performed for the Portland Showcase of Wine and Cheese for seven years.

     He was also invited to perform at the Kick Off Summer celebration at the Philadelphia Airport, "Just Plane Fun".  Mr. English had performed at the Portland, Oregon airport for many years, and was given a sterling recommendation by them.  They are looking forward to having back to sing for them again when he returns on August 1st.

     John English brings Sinatra's romantic ballads and dance music to life.  He says, "I don't try to be Sinatra, I try to bring Sinatra's music to life".  In addition to the Sinatra material, John also sang in the Portland Opera Chorus for a season and a half.  His rich baritone voice was an asset to the Opera, like Sinatra, who sang in the "Italian Bel Canto" style.

      John English's warm and stylish entertainment style has earned him many loyal and enthusiastic fans.  He sings over 200 of Sinatra's most popular hits, as well as all the "Rat Pack" favorites from his Las Vegas years.

      He has performed for numerous corporate events, festivals, clubs, anniversaries, fundraisers, weddings, casino parties, and social gatherings of all kinds.

     Misty Mamas, (formerly Misty River) together since 2007, have become a very popular band in the Portland/Vancouver acoustic music scene.  Misty Mamas serve up Home-Style bluegrass filled with powerful harmonies, traditional and original songs, as well as tasty instrumentals combining the American genres of bluegrass, old time, gospel, folk and country music.  Family friendly, the band can include interactive songs that engage the younger set.

   Celebrating Our 25th Anniversary   March 8, 2014
  
We were so focused on launching our new business in early March, 1989, that we really weren't thinking about where we'd be 25 years hence.  It has been a wonderful journey, made possible, and yes, thrilling, by the outstanding musicians we have had the privilege of representing.

We have expended lots of "Blood, Sweat, and Tears", and many late nights, but it has all be worth it, building a roster of "A List" stars in the Portland area. 

A few of the achievements of which we are the most proud, include being named Associate Producer of the PDX Jazz Summit, a 7-part live jazz series that was broadcast on OPB in the late summer of 1991.   We won a grant proposal from the Oregon Arts Commission that became a seminar for the Oregon Jazz Society called "The Gist Of Jazz".  We wrote a monthly column in Jazzscene magazine for 21 years.

Other projects include two concert productions.  One was called "Sentimental Journey" featuring Oregon's Poet Laureate, Lawson Inada, 2006-2010, who read his award-winning poetry with live jazz accompaniment.   The other was a benefit concert for the School of Piano Technology for the Blind, aka, "Piano Hospital" called "Out of Sight Salsa" featuring Ramsey Embick's Cuban Salsa Band, Ramsey Y Los Montunos.  They are the only school in the world that teaches blind students to tune and repair pianos.

              We are proud to have successfully booked 1000's

After 25 years in business, our clients and colleagues have changed, so we wanted to give you an updated look at how we can help you make finding your special music easier, more cost-effective, and fun.

We will shortly be adding two exciting new Blue Grass Bands, a beautiful, and talented Hawaiian/Tahitian music and performance ensemble, and a Native American musician and dancer, who appears in full regalia.  He is a member of the Apache Nation.  He is also a member of a much larger performing troupe we book.

The Native American artist is very popular for convention entertainment, when the client wishes to create a "Northwest Theme", with a salmon barbeque.  The Hawaiian entertainers are a great fit at a Luau dinner.  They can also provide fresh flower leis.
